CHAPTER FIFTEEN

THE OLD GODS

Suddenly, I could see everything.

In the jungles of the Azu, the treecats leapt at Kives and Felia just as my throat was slit. They fell into a pile of black right before they would have torn open the two pirates. I noticed their eyes, completely filled with a void.

In Essovia, Selix sighed. Work on the underground library went on around him, and he left it for a moment to enter the church. He fell to his knees in front of his own throne and prayed. I heard my name, but my attention did not stay. It couldn’t – elsewhere pulled on it.

In the jungles of Suvamir, Healer stared off into the wind, a distant look in her eye. Breeze spirits rushed her, whispering in her ear, and spun around above her head in a panic. Healer shed a single tear and the spirits went on, spreading news of my death to other places where it was important, other places I did not know.

Avelai was the last my consciousness was pulled to. He remained in Essovia, wandering the town and asking strangers about a man he came across. Suddenly, he fell to his knees and screamed out in pain – he knew I was dead.

He looked up at the sky and cursed the gods. Tears welled in his eyes. The strangers around him backed away from him in fear as he screamed words only I could understand.

“I will wreak havoc on your world if you don’t bring her back to me!” he screamed to the skies, and I could not imagine he spoke of me.

Then, I hovered over my body again, trying to cling to paling skin with rivers of black blood running over an empty shell. I understood what Marlion, whose spirit hovered over his own body in utter loss, meant when he said it was a gruesome sight to watch a hunted die.

It was worse to watch myself die, though I was already dead.

The blood kept pouring. My skin wrinkled as it flattened closer to the ground. I could see the outlines of my organs pushing against the surface.

My empty body filled me with dread. I would be reborn as Avelai’s prey.

An invisible force pulled my ghost towards the skies – I couldn’t hold on anymore once the last drop of blood left my body and sunk into the ground, just as Marlion described.

The sky whisked me past him, and it felt like going backwards in time. Crucial pieces of my life went missing from my mind one by one, pieces I didn’t think I would ever get back.

I tried to scream. The sound that left me was a horrible, moaning one like I imagined a ghost would sound, except no one could hear me.

Not only was I invisible to the world, but also to myself – I didn’t even have a body.

I was pulled higher up and towards a city in the mountains, a city none knew of. I sank down towards the ledges it rested on and heard a woman grunting.
